Within The Case in the Cafe series: \u201ePortrait of J\u0101nis Akuraters\u201d by Konr\u0101ds Ub\u0101ns (1917).<\/p>\n

\u201eDear Mare and Laima! I\u2019ll be brief. I\u2019ve been admitted to Riflemen regiments, listed in the staff of 2nd Latvian brigade<\/em>\u201d \u2013 from the letter to his wife Maija Anna and six-year-old daughter Laima, 16th of November, 1916.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Simultaneously with J\u0101nis Akuraters the same riflemen regiment was voluntarily joined also by poets K\u0101rlis Skalbe and Evarts Virza as well as artists Voldem\u0101rs Tone, Konr\u0101ds Ub\u0101ns and K\u0101rlis Johansons.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Therefore it is very likely that the portraits of J\u0101nis Akuraters from 1917 are the result of one or several get-togethers, where both Voldem\u0101rs Tone and Konr\u0101ds Ub\u0101ns took the opportunity to paint the writer in his riflemen uniform. Quoting the art historian Eduards K\u013cavi\u0146\u0161, these portraits \u201edisplay all main characteristics of portraits by young latvian artists of that time: quite intense depiction, putting more or less emphasis on the physical structure of a model, reduction of setting to the minimum, painting volume with primarily neutral black and gray tones and chiaroscuro combined with indefinite, abstract modelling of form<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the current episode of The Case in the Cafe featuring Konr\u0101ds Ub\u0101ns\u2019 painting \u201ePortrait of J\u0101nis Akuraters\u201d we encounter also \u201ehere and there geometrically cut planes, that imbue the writer\u2019s figure with harshness. The black background and ocherish purple red skin tones enriched with pale gray green plane of uniform speak of K.
