{"id":2246,"date":"2018-04-16T15:25:20","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T12:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.kim.lv\/?p=2246"},"modified":"2018-04-18T14:39:05","modified_gmt":"2018-04-18T11:39:05","slug":"ojars-petersons-orange-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kim.lv\/en\/ojars-petersons-orange-corner\/","title":{"rendered":"Oj\u0101rs P\u0113tersons &#8220;The Orange Corner&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><em>Before Vassiliy went back to Saint Petersburg, we talked about the exhibition by Oj\u0101rs P\u0113tersons Oran\u017eais st\u016bris (The Orange Corner), which would be held at <\/em>Kim?<em> in the middle of August, and Vassiliy was complaining about not being able to see it, while I went on about having to construct some kind of text based only on a few lines that Oj\u0101rs had sent, mentioning things like student summer internships, \u201ca few photographs, some granite, sound\u201d and \u201csome similar stuff\u201d, as well as two different meanings of the word \u201ccorner\u201d. We did not have much of a conversation, for we thought that the concept of the exhibition is concealed in a silent irony of evasive phrases, while naming a few things leaves potentially infinite space for their topical visualization (which then is this very \u201cvisible\u201d artwork), just like the mentioning of \u201ccorners\u201d of Boyce, Flavin or even Tatlin would quite contrary draw too much of imagination to genuineness of history.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having come home, I opened that page in the Philosophical Investigations that speaks about illustrations of a book \u2013 a rectangular parallelepiped drawn with lines \u2013 and its potential interpretations depending on its accompanying text. Here, for example: \u201cIn the accompanying text, something different is in question every time: here a glass cube, there an upturned open box, there a wire frame of that shape, there three boards forming a solid angle. Each time the text supplies the interpretation of the illustration.\u201d<\/p>\n<span class=\"indent\"><\/span>Here Wittgenstein is interested in what he calls \u201cnoticing an aspect\u201d, and so he continues: \u201cBut we can also see the illustration now as one thing,\u00a0now as another. \u2013 So we interpret it, and see it as we interpret it.\u201d<\/p>\n<span class=\"indent\"><\/span>By reading this passage again, I contemplate that the seeing as analysed in Philosophical Investigations \u2013 for instance, seeing something as salience you can run into or a corner you can get stuck in \u2013 could be generalised and attributed to the relationship between the visible or invisible part of the artwork and its very conception or interpretation. Yet a concept can be verbally tacit, unmanifested openly or only intuitively grasped, but interpretation can take place at a level of naive realism, which, similarly to Don Quixote, takes seriously some fantastic adventures of some kind of Amadis of Gaul described in knight novels.<\/p>\n<span class=\"indent\"><\/span>So what is a viewer who is not cased in armour left to do? All but hope for materiality of an artwork and for orange colour protecting them from running into a sharp edge or from getting stuck in a corner, where misbehaved children used to be put on their knees on peas. This could be called the truth content of an artwork, although for me as an idealist \u201ccorner\u201d and \u201cedge\u201d are just different notions in our heads.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\/ from J\u0101nis Taurens records inspired from conversation with Vas\u012blijs Voronovs\/<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>Looking again at the &#8220;received paragraphs&#8221;, we suddenly realize something more in relation to the corner &#8211; &#8220;in one way we understand \u201cthe corner\u201d as a protrusion. An inward \u201cnook\u201d. After all, the term \u201cput in the corner\u201d is also used\u201d. With that, I assume the word \u201ccorner\u201d has two primary meanings. In any case \u2013 there have to be two elements \u2013 two walls angled or something else, where to get stuck or to bump into.\u201d The above quoted conversation, by the way, has the following title \u201cget stuck or bump into; a prelude\u201d. Are all the corners already occupied?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Oj\u0101rs P\u0113tersons<\/span>\u00a0has graduated from the Riga School of Applied Art, Department of Woodcarving (1975) and the Art Academy of Latvia, Department of Industrial Arts (1980). The artist works with installations, new media objects and easel graphics. P\u0113tersons has repeatedly represented Latvia abroad and he has been one of the three artists participating in the 48th Venice Biennale (together with Inta Ruka and Anta Zabi\u013cevska).
