The exhibition is part of the American culture month “Made in the USA”<\/a> programme and is supported by the Embassy of the US in Latvia<\/a> and airBaltic<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The exhibition \u201cOnce Upon a Time in the West\u201d showcases 15 photographs from the series bearing the same name. Schuman has researched \u201cthe American myth\u201d and attempted to define its symbols \u2013 brutal individual, precise shooter and defender of righteousness. All these elements are summed up in the film \u201cOnce Upon a Time in the West\u201d (1968) by the Italian film director Sergio Leone. The film inspired Schuman to create the photographs at the film sets of \u201cspaghetti Westerns\u201d in the Almerian deserts in the southern of Spain. The experiment resulted in a revelation that the fundamental American myth \u2013 the Wild West and its associations with freedom, rebelliousness, brutality, morality and honour \u2013 was most successfully transposed by the Italian director onto the landscape of Franco\u2019s Spain. \u00a0Schuman attempted to discover what these sets \u2013 flimsy, worn and weathered, but still standing forty years on \u2013 might insinuate about the state of America, its ideals, reputation, ambitions, vision and illusions.\u00a0 The series might serve as the starting point for a deeper research into the symbolism of the American dream.<\/p>\n
