airBaltic<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\nEsther Stocker, who is inspired by writings of German mathematician, logician and philosopher Gottlob Frege, Charles Schultz’s classic comic strip \u201cPeanuts\u201d, and science fiction books, comments on her creative process, \u201cIn my paintings and installations I am not searching for perfection, I am searching for mistakes. The starting point of my artwork is often a regular geometrical system, regular lines or the grid \u2013 then I repair it. Its damage is its exactness, it needs to be repaired by damaging it, by slightly changing the form; this can be an absent form, displacement or a shift. What fascinates me the most are formal paradoxes, the logic of contradiction \u2013 that a structure can be ordered and disordered at the same time. That the exactness of geometry sometimes becomes vague.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stocker\u2019s paintings and installations are explorations of what isn’t \u2013 of what remains after the careful geometric demarcation of a blank canvas or an empty room. Seemingly simple geometric shapes are put together in a way that the viewer cannot say for sure if he or she is looking at a picture or standing in an installation. The viewer has lost orientation even before he or she can start to think about what orientation in the perceived could mean. In her Stocker’s works, grids repeatedly come to the fore, while theories of human perception bubble under the surface.<\/p>\n
Born in Italy in 1974, Esther Stocker attended art schools in Vienna (Akademie der Bildenden K\u00fcnste<\/em>), Milan (Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera<\/em>) and California (Art Center College of Design<\/em>). Her paintings, installations and objects have been exhibited both in solo, as well as group exhibitions in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, US and elsewhere. Stocker has received a number of prizes, such as Preis der Stadt Wien<\/em> in 2009, S\u00fcdtiroler Preis f\u00fcr Kunst am Bau<\/em> in 2007 and others.<\/p>\nThe lecture will be in English.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
