Contemporary Art Centre is proud to present <i>Bi-D\u017ea, Ge-Ilk, Mir-Nul, <\/i>the largest solo exhibition up to date by Riga born artist Elza S\u012ble.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Centred on a personal impulse to revisit childhood nostalgia and critically consider the rigidly (alphabetically) categorised\u2014yet overwhelmingly obscure\u2014content of Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (LSSR) Encyclopaedia, <i>Bi-D\u017ea, Ge-Ilk, Mir-Nul<\/i> assembles new wall and floor based works by S\u012ble.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">In the context of the exhibition, didactic ideological system(s), typically masked by and presented as seductive images in the context of their mass distribution, pave the way for a series of variable-format works which take their ideological construction into consideration. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">For S\u012ble, the issue of widespread resistance to populist speech is inculcated in an individual\u2019s critical thinking skill, which becomes further enmeshed in the dominant cultural narrative and its multitude of ideological battlegrounds. S\u012ble insists that this is a pivotal (artistic) position to occupy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">A new body of works by S\u012ble divide images into the mnemonic, semantic, and formal devices. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">S\u012ble <\/span><span class=\"s1\">bridges the gap between forensic scenes and laboratory-like environments, drawing them together and suggesting that associative visual images and rhetoric are worthy of our critical examination. The work further questions the prevailing rhetoric as an act of delusion, lies and fear mongering across the various reigning powers. D<\/span><span class=\"s3\">eparting from the experience of encountering the Latvian State Socialist Republic Encyclopaedias in her youth, S\u012ble indexes the complex set of relationships which coexist amongst living generations\u2014conscious, unconscious\u2014with the past and its impact on individual and group reasoning and argumentation patterns today. The appalling confrontation\/s <\/span><span class=\"s1\">unfolding in Europe at the moment make these <i>theoretical\/artistic<\/i> inquiries more poignant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Bi-D\u017ea, Ge-Ilk, Mir-Nul<\/i>\u00a0 comprises three volumes.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Part One (<i>Bi-D\u017ea<\/i>) <\/b>includes large-format, repurposed leather-covered panels containing visual narratives in the form of small image and text applications. Simultaneously, they are a caricature of the-shrink-couch-meets-Soviet-era-apartment-upholstery-meets-Encyclopaedia-spine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Part Two (<i>Ge-Ilk<\/i>) <\/b>is a \u201c<i>special operation\u201d<\/i> unfolding on the surface of medium-format aluminium plates. While the mark left on them by <\/span><span class=\"s2\">S\u012ble is a heterogeneous blend of<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> colourful, semi-fluid materials further adorned by gelatin\/graphite pencil, the prevailing message here is to evoke the camouflage techniques of wartime deception strategies (WWII, Cold war, <i>now<\/i>\u2026). <b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Part Three (<i>Mir-Nul<\/i>)<\/b> could be misinterpreted as pure <i>cuteness<\/i>; however, the work was <\/span><span class=\"s1\">developed out of the sheer exhaustion of dramatically shrinking a rectangular painting format into a single dimension. As a result, the painted skin of the surface is rolled up and<i> <\/i>crowded onto a skinny stick-trampoline, also referred to as <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201cstick-cattail\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Countering S\u012ble&#8217;s key references denoting a white male-imposed world-order, the project \u2014 conceived by<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Elza S\u012ble, Maya Lama, Evija S\u012ble and Ludmila Iva\u0161\u010duka, Zane Onckule, Evita Goze, and El\u012bna Dr\u0101ke, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">hold a woman-identified position in counterbalance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Latvian Soviet Encyclopaedia<\/b> is a universal encyclopaedia in Latvian in 10 volumes published between 1981 and 1988. Containing around 60,000 articles, and including around 20,000 illustrations and over 600 maps, it was intended to be a comprehensive atlas of <i>all <\/i>fields of knowledge, with the expected ideological emphasis of publications originating in the Soviet bloc in the period. Volumes:<i> A-Bh<\/i> (1981),<i> Bi-D\u017ea <\/i>(1982), <i>D\u017ee-Hain <\/i>(1983), <i>Hait-Karta<\/i> (1983), <i>Karte-Lauk<\/i> (1984), <i>Latvijas PSR<\/i> (1984), <i>Lauk-Monr<\/i> (1985), <i>Mons-Plato <\/i>(1986), <i>Platp-Singa<\/i> (1986), <i>Singo-Trien<\/i> (1987), <i>Tries-\u017dv\u012bgu<\/i> (1987), <i>supplement <\/i>(1988).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Biography<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Elza S\u012ble (CH\/LV)<\/b> is a visual artist. S\u012ble combines mental imagery with analytic divisions and builds up an interwoven vocabulary of psycho-spatial typologies in flux. In 2019, S\u012ble graduated from ZHdK Zurich. In September, S\u012ble is scheduled to have a residency at ISCP New York provided by Kim? Contemporary Art Centre. Recent solo exhibitions include at PHILIPPZOLLINGER (Zurich, 2021); unanimous consent (Zurich, 2020) and Kulturfolger Z\u00fcrich (2020). She has participated in numerous two-person and group shows, such as at Haus Konstruktiv (Zurich, 2022); Misako &amp; Rosen (Tokyo, 2022); Kim? Contemporary Art Centre (Riga, 2020); Kunsthalle Zurich (2020); Hamlet (Zurich, 2020) and Galerie Kirchgasse (Steckborn, 2020).
