Its structure – from root, snake, or mermaid-tail twists to a figurative form – embodies the process of creation as a transition from fragmented to whole. The sculpture simultaneously resonates with diverse cultural and mythological traditions, from Aphrodite’s birth from sea foam to Māra as a symbol of fertility and water deity. These references are interpreted through a contemporary visual language, highlighting water as a bearer of life, a vessel of memory, and a resource whose significance is particularly pressing today. The work functions as an element of public space, integrating a poetic and analytical perspective on the search for balance between environment and culture.

Anastasia Sosunova’s Solo Exhibition Spit Bite

Spit Bite, Anastasia Sosunova’s first solo exhibition in Latvia, brings together new and earlier works in a multifaceted exploration of DIY culture, fan art, and the search for the origins of the copy as such.

The artist takes her title from a printmaking term – “spit bite” – in which acid is applied directly to the printing plate, biting into the metal upon contact. Indeed, countless moving and still images are “spat out” into the world, leaving bite marks behind. At Kim?, Sosunova presents etched but un-inked plates, freezing images in a state of pure potential and reproducibility, juxtaposed with her recent video and sculptural works. The latter represent a kind of fan art devoted to construction supply stores: quoting sacred texts, performing rituals, and seeking hidden symbols in the logos, architecture, and even discount catalogues of a business empire. At its core, Spit Bite engages with the artist’s fascination with the emergence and circulation of images, desires, and followings – their mutual influences, hybridisations, and strategies of self-preservation.

More information on all White Night events:
www.baltanakts.lv
facebook.com/Baltanakts

The aim of White Night is to encourage the public to discover the diversity of contemporary culture, to stimulate interest in art, and to foster dialogue between different communities.
