Circles Are Better Than Lines, solo presentation of a new body of work by Krista Vindberga-Auzniece

For Artissima, Kim? presents works by Krista Vindberga-Auzniece from her most recent solo exhibition, Circles Are Better Than Lines (oda pieskārienam) (August–October, September 2026). The presentation centres on Vindberga’s sustained engagement with drawing as a tactile and embodied practice, in which charcoal becomes a material through which touch, duration, and memory are registered. Working from fragments of family photographic archives, she isolates fleeting gestures and overlooked moments, translating them through accumulative marks and subtle physical pressure. Enlarged beyond their original scale, these images shift between intimacy and estrangement, becoming meditations on presence, recollection, and the quiet emotional charge of the ordinary.

Krista Vindberga-Auzniece (1989) is a visual artist working across a range of media and scales, from small-format drawings to large-scale scenographic works for theatre and opera. She holds a BA in painting from the Art Academy of Latvia and an MA in visual communication. Her work has been presented in solo, duo, and group exhibitions in Latvia and internationally, including at the Latvian National Museum of Art and Kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga, Alma Gallery in Riga, and Kogo Gallery in Tartu. In 2019, she received an award at the Prague Quadrennial. She has also received the Spēlmaņu nakts Theatre Award and the Latvian National Theatre Award for scenography. She has been nominated for the Purvītis Prize three times, in 2015, 2021, and 2023. Her work is held in the collection of the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Latvian National Museum of Art, and private collections in Latvia and abroad.

About Artissima

Artissima is Italy’s most important contemporary art fair. Since its establishment in 1994, it has combined an international market presence with a focus on experimentation and research. Galleries from around the world participate each year. In addition to its four flagship sections (Main Section, Monologue/Dialogue, New Entries, Art Editions), Artissima also comprises three curated sections, led by an international board of curators and museum directors, devoted to emerging artists (Present Future), to the rediscovery of the pioneers of contemporary art (Back to the Future), and to drawing (Disegni).
