Kim? Contemporary Art Centre
Kim? at June Art Fair 2021 / Booth 24 / Daria Melnikova, Amanda Ziemele

Founded in Riga in 2009, Kim? Contemporary Art Centre has actively contributed to the art discourse in Latvia whilst participating in many international collaborations. For June Art Fair this year Kim? presents a body of work by two Riga based artists: Daria Melnikova and Amanda Ziemele.

June Art Fair is a gallery led art fair during Basel Art Week. Founded as an independent project by galleries VI, VII (Oslo) and Christian Andersen, (Copenhagen), June Art Fair is an initiative led by pioneering galleries working at the forefront of contemporary art.

Daria Melnikova (b. 1984) in her new series employs a variety of media that balances between a meditative study of daily routine, clichés, architectural details and mere casual moments. Crafted using everything from exquisite materials to those conventionally considered cheap or cliché, Melnikova creates wall based sculptural forms that celebrate the laborious nature of a studio practice that stands against the constraints imposed by the attention economy. Melnikova has recently exhibited at Salon du Salon, Marseille; Gallery Vartai, Vilnius; Karlin Studios, Prague; PLATO, Ostrava and Kulturfolger, Zurich. Her works are included in the collection of Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland, Latvian National Museum of Art, as well as a number of private collections.

Amanda Ziemele (b. 1990) currently lives and works in Latvia. She views her practice as an open field where the main focus is on the formal qualities of painting, context of site-specific situations, interventions and open humorous strategies. Ziemele has participated in various collaborative projects and in 2020 joined the team of the female artist-run institution LOW Gallery. Her works are included in the collection of Latvian National Museum of Art, Eimanda Zeina Collection, as well as several private collections in Latvia and abroad. Ziemele is the recipient of The Purvītis Prize 2021.
